Matthews Homers But Knights Drop Series Finale With Lefties
PORT ANGELES, Wash. – Gabe Matthews homered and Cole Johnson drove in two runs but the Corvallis Knights fell 7-6 on Sunday in the finale of their West Coast League series at Port Angeles.
A rising sophomore at Oregon, Matthews (pictured, above) sent the Knights ahead 2-1 with a solo homer in the fourth inning, his second of the season. Corvallis leads the WCL with a franchise-record 34 homers.
Johnson’s (Pacific Lutheran) bases-loaded single to center field with two outs in the seventh inning gave the Knights a 6-4 lead. He had four RBIs on Saturday night and finished the series with six total; nine of his 12 total RBIs have come in his last six games.
However, four relievers were unable to hold the Lefties off. They scored once in the seventh, eighth and ninth innings to avoid a sweep in the initial series between the teams in Port Angeles.
The Knights (30-13 all, 26-13 WCL, 9-3 WCL second half) are idle Monday and Tuesday during the WCL all-star break. They resume WCL action at Walla Walla on Wednesday.
