Mondeau’s two homers lead rout of Berries
Monday, June 30, Salem, Ore. – Braeden Moneau homered twice and drove in three runs as the Knights ended the first half of the West Coast League season by thumping the Marion Berries 12-3 at the Chemeketa Baseball Field.
Corvallis (18-10, 17-10 WCL) finished the first half on a tear, winning five in a row and 13 of 16 to assume second place in the South Division behind first-half champion Portland. The Knights were 4-7 in the WCL following a 6-5 loss to the Berries at Goss Stadium on June 15 before beginning their turnaround.
The homers were the first of the year for Mondeau, a 10-day signee from Hawaii-Hilo who earned a full-time position with his versatile defensive play and strong bat. He is 5-for-12 (.417) since emerging from a 3-for-31 slump on June 27 and has raised his average from .205 to .235.
Brock Ketelsen (Stanford) was 2-for-3 with an RBI. Kellen Segel (LBCC) scored twice and drove in a run. Gavin Brubaker (NW Nazarene) was 2-for-3 with a double, a run and three RBIs; he and Mason Riske (USC) are tied for the team lead with 15.
Corvallis scored once in the first inning, twice in the second, and took a 3-2 lead into the fifth. That’s when it erupted for five runs to break the game open.
Mondeau led off with a solo home run, his first of the summer. Gavin Brubaker (NW Nazarene) capped the rally with a two-run, two-out double that made it 8-2.
Mondeau slammed another homer leading off a two-run sixth inning. The Knights added on with single runs in the seventh and eighth.
Chase Olson (Nebraska) relieved Cornhusker teammate J’Shawn Unger in the third inning and blanked the Berries on four hits for 3.2 innings, striking out five. Easton Jones (Utah) got the final out of the sixth and pitched the seventh.
Lefty Mac Zawistoski (Chaminade) finished up with two scoreless innings. He has not allowed an earned run in eight innings over his last four appearances, lowering his ERA to 1.38.
Corvallis hosts Gunderson Baseball on July 1 and the Northwest Stars on July 3 in a pair of nonleague games. It resumes the second half of the WCL slate with Bend at Goss Stadium on July 4-6.
July 3 is the annual Oregon State Credit Union Fireworks Night, with a special 7:15 p.m. starting time. Incoming Oregon State freshman Tyler Bellerose, who joined the team on June 30, will start for the Knights.
The Knights have made several roster moves. Portland rising sophomore Tyler Swygart has joined the team and will be available for duty on July 3. TCU pitcher Nate Stern has left the club.
A 6-foot-3, 225-pounder from Middleton High School in Caldwell, Idaho, Swygart was named a second-team 2025 Perfect Game Freshman All-American. He played in 32 games, with 25 starts as a position player/DH, and pitched in 11 games.
Swygart hit .342 with six home runs and 14 RBIs, with an OPS of 1.144. He posted a 6.97 ERA in 31.0 innings pitched, with two saves.
Stern was 0-0, 1.12 in two games, with eight strikeouts and eight hits allowed in eight innings.
