Knights drop series finale at Bend, 2-1
Sunday, June 8, Bend, Ore. – The Knights offense went cold again and Corvallis completed a season-opening road trip by losing 2-1 to Bend in the rubber game of a South Division series at Vince Genna Stadium.
The Knights (2-5 all, 1-5 WCL), who fell 11-2 on June 7 in the middle game, got a strong starting pitching performance from Sam Coffman (Umpqua CC, pictured above). He allowed just one run on four hits in five innings, with two strikeouts and only one walk.
Relievers Chase Olson (Nebraska), Nate Marshall (Eastern Illinois) and Trey Newmann (TCU) combined to allow only three hits and aun unearned run over the final three innings to keep the Knights in the game.
Bend led 1-0 through seven innings and added an unearned run in the eighth to take a 2-0 lead into the ninth. Second baseman Braeden Moreau (Hawaii Hilo) singled to lead off the frame and eventually scored on a two-out wild pitch, but the tying run was stranded at second base.
Center fielder Kellen Segel doubled for Corvallis’ lone extra-base hit. He had two doubles, a homer and three RBIs in the series.
A 10-day signee making a strong bid for a full-time position, Moreau’s base hit gave him at least one hit in five of the Knights’ six games. He is batting .304 and has two multi-hit games.
The Knights home opener against the Springfield Drifters is set for 6:35 p.m. June 11 at Goss Stadium.
