Knights topple Pippins 7-1, capture series 2-1

Thursday, June 26, Yakima, Wash.  – The Knights defeated Yakima Valley 7-1 in the rubber game of their South Division series before a Yakima County Stadium crowd of 931.

Thomas Ferroggiaro (Santa Clara, pictured above) drove in two runs for Corvallis (14-10, 13-10 WCL), which remained in third place in the South Division’s first-half pennant race.

Xavier Rios (CSUN) was 3-for-5 with a run and a stolen base and Maddox Riske (USC) was 2-for-5 with a run and a stolen base to complement Ferroggiaro.

Corvallis scored four times in the first three innings to grab a quick 4-1 lead.

In the first, Ferroggiaro had an RBI single and Braeden Mondeau (Hawaii-Hilo) an RBI groundout. Brock Ketelsen (Stanford) slammed a solo homer in the second, and a run scored on an error in the third.

A squeeze bunt by Ferroggiaro made it 5-1 in the sixth. It scored Joshua Proctor (Oregon State), who led off the inning with a single and moved to third on a sacrifice and a single by Blake Wilson (Washington).

Corvallis scored its final two runs in the ninth on an error and an RBI single by Maverek Russell (UCLA).

Starter Zach Johnson (Linfield) allowed one run on one hit over five innings to earn the win. He struck out three and faced just 17 batters, only two over the five-inning minimum. Johnson has posted a 2.70 ERA over his last two starts, allowing only three runs in 10 total innings.

Mac Zawistoski (Chaminade) added two scoreless innings, and Parker Warner (Stanford) went the final two.

Corvallis returned home after the game and will host the Cowlitz Black Bears on June 27-29 at Goss Stadium. The Knights swept a series between the clubs in Longview back on June 17-19, outscoring Cowlitz 20-9.

The weekend’s probable pitching matchups are (in order, Corvallis starter first):  Jake Fields of Long Beach State (0-1, 2.07) vs. Matthew Sherwood of Pacific Lutheran (0-1, 3.37); Trey Newmann of Portland (1-0, 6.23) vs. Hudson Aber of UCSB (0-0, 13.50), and Nate Stern of TCU (0-0, 1.12) vs. Brady Trombello of Texas Tech (0-0, 15.00).

All are right-handers.
