Knights topple Berries 9-7, split double dip
Sunday, June 15, Corvallis, Ore. – The Knights scored seven times in the second inning and held on to edge Marion 9-7 to split a South Division doubleheader with the Berries at Goss Stadium.
A Father’s Day crowd of 1,352 also saw the Berries rally from a 5-0 deficit to win the opener, 6-5. The Knights (6-7 all, 5-7 WCL) thus split their initial series with Marion, the newest team in the West Coast League.
Second baseman Gavin Brubaker (NW Nazarene, picture above) was the offensive star for Corvallis in the nightcap. He went 3-for-4 with a double, two runs, a steal and two RBIs and was named the Washington Park Advisors Player of the Game.
Maddox Riske (USC) and Braeden Mondeau (Hawaii-Hilo) each drove in two runs and scored once; Mondeau was 2-for-4 with a triple. Antonio Castro (Cal Poly) also scored and drove in a run.
Reliever Easton Jones (Utah) was clutch, twirling 2.1 scoreless innings to keep the Berries at bay after they had cut a 7-0 deficit to 7-4. Zach Johnson (Linfield) pitched the seventh for the save.
Riske was 9-for-16 (.563) for the four-game series, with three runs and four RBIs, raising his average from .000 to .429. Brubacker was 7-for-15 (.467), also with three runs and four RBIs.
Corvallis squandered a 5-0 lead in the opener, as the Berries scored three times in the fifth and three more times in the sixth to erase the big deficit.
Castro had two hits, a run, two steals and an RBI to lead the offense, earning him Washington Park Advisors Player of the Game honors.
Corvallis had just one hit over the final four innings and that baserunner was erased on a double play.
The homestand concludes on June 16 with a rematch against Springfield; Corvallis defeated the Drifters on June 11 and June 12 in the first two games of the series. Right-hander Nate Stern of TCU will make his season debut as the starter for the Knights.
The game is presented by the Linn-Benton Community College Foundation. LBCC students will be admitted free of charge and a $1,000 scholarship will be awarded every inning.
The Knights then head to Longview, Wash., for a June 17-19 series against the Cowlitz Black Bears. They return home to host the Ridgefield Raptors on June 20-22.
