Knights edge Berries for third straight win

Friday, June 13, Corvallis, Ore. – The Knights stretched their West Coast League winning streak to three games by edging the Marion Berries 4-3 before a crowd of 870 at Goss Stadium.

It was the first game in history between the Knights (5-5 all, 4-5 WCL) and the Berries, an expansion team located in Salem.

Corvallis starter Trey Newmann (Portland, pictured above) allowed six hits and only two runs over five innings in a quality start to post his first victory of  the summer. Newman struck out seven, did not issue a walk, and stranded three baserunners in his final two innings of work.

He earned Washington Park Advisors Player of the Game honors.

Relievers Mac Zawistoski (Chaminade) and Nate Marshall (Eastern Illinois) combined for the final four innings, helping save the rest of the bullpen for the final four games of the homestand.

Zawistoski allowed one run and no hits in 2.1 innings, with two strikeouts. Marshall got the final two outs in the eighth, stranding the tying run at third, and then hurled a scoreless ninth to record the save.

Jakob Marquez (Lewis-Clark State) doubled twice and scored twice. Catcher Xavier Rios (CSUN) had a triple, a run and two RBIs; Maddox Riske (USC) and Braeden Mondeau (Hawaii-Hilo) had two hits each.

Rios drove in the Knights first run with a second-inning groundout. The Berries went ahead 2-1 in the third, but the Knights got an RBI triple from Rios and a go-ahead sacrifice fly by Maverek Russell (UCLA) to go up 3-2 in the fourth.

Corvallis made it 4-2 in the seventh on a walk, a single and an RBI double by Mondeau.

The series continues on June 14th with Baseball Giveaway Night, sponsored by Heresco Chiropractic. The first 250 fans will receive a free baseball courtesy of the team’s longtime sponsor. Chase Olson of Nebraska (0-1, 3.60) gets the ball for Corvallis, pitted against Steven Veresy of Willamette (1-0, 0.00) in a matchup of right-handers.

Father’s Day on June 15 will feature a 5:05 p.m. doubleheader against the Berries, presented by Les Schwab Tire Center. Fans can play catch on the field and kids can run the bases following the second 7-inning contest.

Corvallis’s projected starters are Jake Fields (0-1, 3.60) of Long Beach State and Sam Coffman (0-1, 2.57) of Umpqua CC. The Berries will counter with Chase Garland (0-0, 0.00) of Oregon and Wes Plenert (0-1, 3.17) of George Fox.
