Knights down HarbourCats, claim yet another WCL series victory

Tuesday, August 6, Victoria, B.C. – Corvallis won another West Coast League series by topping Victoria 5-4 in the team’s penultimate game of the regular season.

The Knights (47-12 overall, 41-12 WCL, 19-7 second half) stretched their WCL winning streak to seven games in a row by winning for the 12th time in their last 14 league games. They went 15-3 in WCL series this summer.

Designated hitter Brandon Cabrera (Lewis-Clark State) doubled twice, singled, drove in two runs and scored another to pace a 15-hit Corvallis attack. Second baseman Kevin Takeuchi (USC) homered for the second game in a row, giving him a team-high five homers and a league-leading 45 RBIs.

Shortstop Ty Yukumoto (Gonzaga)was 3-for-5 with a run; left fielder Ben Leid (Central Washington) was 2-for-4 with an RBI and center fielder Blake Wilson (Washington) was 2-for-4 with a double.

Starting pitcher Cohen Gomez (Stanford) turned in his third successive strong outing by allowing no runs and only one hit on four innings, with four strikeouts. He has surrendered just two runs and eight hits over 15 innings in his last three appearances, with 12 strikeouts; his ERA has dropped from 4.56 to 3.31.

Reliever Gabe Hernandez (CSUN) was touched for an unearned run in 2.2 innings as the bridge to CJ Colyer (Pacific) in the ninth. Hernandez has not allowed an earned run in 16.2 innings over his last nine appearances.

Colyer retired the HarbourCats in order on jut seven pitches for his first save. It was his 11th scoreless outing in 12 total games.

The series and regular season concludes at 6:40 p.m. Aug. 7. Jackson Walker (0-0,0.00) of Yakima Valley CC will start for the Knights.

The Knights claimed the first-half South Division championship and advanced to the West Coast League playoffs for the 17th consecutive season. The postseason starts on Aug. 10; Corvallis will have the home-field advantage throughout the playoffs because it has the league’s best overall record.
