Sweets take series following 9-1 victory

Sunday, July 19, Corvallis, Ore.  – Walla Walla thumped Corvallis 9-1 in the rubber game of their West Coast League South Division series.

A Stand up to Cancer Night crowd of 1,203 at Goss Stadium saw the Knights (24-19, 20-19 WCL, 7-5 second half) allow eight unanswered runs after they had tied the game 1-1 in the second inning.

A four-run third inning by the Sweets was decisive. They added two runs in the fifth and single tallies in the sixth and seventh to leave the Knights done and dusted.

Catcher Dakota Chun (Portland) was 2-for-3; the only Knight with more than one hit merited Washington Park Advisors Player of the Game honors. Zane Garvey’s (Portland) RBI single in the second accounted for their only run.

Relievers Nate Marshall (Eastern Illinois) and Matthew Kosderka (Lower Columbia) were the most effective of Corvallis’s six pitchers. Each threw a scoreless inning; Marshall has still not allowed a run in 10.2 innings through six appearances.

Corvallis idle on July 20. The ongoing homestand concludes on July 20-22 with a South Division series against the Bend Elks; all three games begin at 6:35 p.m.

The Stand Up to Cancer Night crowd of 1,203 raised the season attendance to 35,068 in 23 dates, an average of 1,525 per opening.
