Knights top Gunderson 10-6 in nonleague tilt
Tuesday, July 13, Corvallis, Ore. – The Knights hammered Gunderson Baseball 10-6 in a nonleague matchup before a Goss Stadium crowd of 1,308.
Corvallis (23-17, 19-17 WCL, 6-3 second half). Scored seven unanswered runs in the fourth and fifth innings to snap a 2-2 tie. Dakota Chun (Portland) and Joey Marasco (George Fox) had run-scoring doubles to key the decisive five-run fifth.
DH Kellen Segel, a recent Cal Poly commit, was 4-for-5 with a run, two RBIs and a triple to nab Washington Park Advisors Player of the Game laurels. Chun and Marasco each drove in two runs.
Starter Blake Sebastian (Nebraska, pictured above) pitched three shutout innings, allowing two hits and striking out five. Oregon State signees Luke Duncan and Creighton Tuzzio made their pitching debuts, and each booked a scoreless inning.
The Knights are idle on July 15 for the WCL All-Star Game at Victoria. Pitcher Morgan Codron (Portland) and utility Ethan Porter (Oregon State) will represent Corvallis.
The Knights host the Salem Sock Puppets in another nonleague game on July 16. They resume WCL action against Walla Walla at Goss Stadium on July 17-19.
Corvallis’s probable starting pitchers for July 17-18 have not been announced. Nebraska lefty Colin Nowaczyk (2-0, 2.40) gets the ball on July 19.
The crowd of 1,308 raised the season total to 28,115 in 19 dates, an average of 1,480 per opening.
The Knights announced some roster changes before the game.
Codron will be shut down after the All-Star Game. He was 0-2, 3.86 in five games, with 28 strikeouts in 18.2 innings.
Also, shortstop Archer Horn, an incoming Stanford freshman, won’t play again this summer. He hit .266 in eight games, with a homer and 10 RBIs.
