Sweets claim series win with 8-3 victory
Wednesday, June 3, Walla Walla, Wash. – Walla Walla clinched its first series win against the Knights since 2024 with an 8-3 triumph at Borkeske Stadium in Game 2 of their West Coast League matchup.
Corvallis (4-2 all, 3-2 WCL) entered the series with eight consecutive wins over the Sweets, a streak that began on July 30, 2024. However, Walla Walla won the June 2 opener 5-3 and made it two straight in convincing fashion.
The Knights’ first run came in the fifth inning. Designated hitter Carter Stewart (Portland, pictured above) smacked a leadoff triple to deep center and Jackson Fera (LBCC) knocked him home with an RBI single to right field.
It was the second triple of the summer for Stewart. He has at least one hit in all three of his starts, with two RBIs. He lost an apparent RBI single in the eighth when his line-shot destined for left field instead struck the base umpire for a single that made the lead runner stop at third.
Corvallis did score twice in the eighth, on a leadoff homer by Trey Swygart (Portland) and a bases-loaded walk by Zane Garvey (Western Oregon). They had the bases loaded with one out but two strikeouts ended the rally.
The Sweets built a 3-0 lead through the first four innings off of Matthew Sherwood (PLU), making his second start of the summer. He allowed two earned runs through four innings, with two strikeouts.
Walla Walla scored four times in the sixth to break the game open, aided by a two-out, bad-hop single that scored two runs.
The series concludes at 6:35 p.m. on June 4. The Knights wrap up their season-opening nine-game road trip at Portland on June 5-7.
Their WCL home opener is set for June 10 against the Marion Berries, starting at 6:35 p.m. at Goss Stadium.
