Coffman razor-sharp as Knights prevail 4-0
Tuesday, July 1, Corvallis, Ore. – Sam Coffman pitched five scoreless innings in an outstanding start and the Knights blanked Gunderson Baseball 4-0 in a nonleague game before 1,280 fans at Goss Stadium.
An incoming junior at Division II power Metropolitan State in his hometown of Denver, Coffman (pictured, above) allowed just two hits and struck out eight. He had at least one strikeout in every inning, threw 45 strikes in 75 pitches and was named the Washington Park Advisors Player of the Game.
It was the sixth consecutive win overall for Corvallis (19-10 all, 17-10 WCL).
Michael Singleton (George Fox), Nate Marshall (Eastern Illinois), Troy Cooper (Cal Poly) and Parker Warner (Stanford) each added an inning of scoreless, hitless relief in completing the game in an efficient 2:23.
Joshua Proctor’s (Oregon State) two-run single in the second put the Knights ahead for good. Maverek Russell (UCLA) added an RBI single in the fourth and his RBI fielder’s choice completed the scoring in the sixth.
DH Ian Fernandez (UCSB) doubled twice and scored; Proctor was 2-for-4 with a run and two RBIs.
Corvallis hosts the Northwest Stars on July 3 in the annual Oregon State Credit Union Fireworks Night contest, with a special 7:15 p.m. starting time. Incoming Oregon State freshman Tyler Bellerose, who joined the team on June 30, will start for the Knights.
Corvallis begins the second half of the West Coast League season on July 4-6 with a home series against the Bend Elks.
The Knights have made another roster move, as Portland rising sophomore Cole Katayama-Stall will join the team on July 3. He is a 6-foot-1, 190-pounder from Portland who graduated from Westview High School.
He played in 50 games for the Pilots in 2025, hitting .255 with nine homers and 38 RBIs. He is an infielder.
