Knights prevail 4-3, complete series sweep of Port Angeles

Sunday, June 16, Corvallis, Ore. – Jackson Flora pitched four no-hit innings in his Corvallis debut and the Knights completed a weekend sweep of Port Angeles with a 4-3 victory on a overcast, rainy afternoon before 1,462 hardy fans at Goss Stadium.

It was the eighth win in a row for the Knights (14-1, 13-1 WCL) but it did not come easy. The Lefties rallied from a 3-1 deficit to deadlock the game 3-3 before the Knights walked it off in the ninth.

Incoming Oregon State freshman Paul Vazquez opened the home ninth with a single, then was sacrificed to second by pinch-hitter Ty Yukumoto (Pacific). With Brandon Cabrera (Lewis-Clark State) at the plate, pinch-runner Kellen Segel (LBCC, pictured above) stole third and continued home with the winning run when the catcher threw the ball into left field.

CJ Colyer (Pacific), customarily a position player, pitched a scoreless ninth inning and was credited with the win.

A rising sophomore right-hander at UC Santa Barbara, Flora struck out three and needed just 36 pitches to retire 12 of the 13 Lefties he faced. He threw 26 strikes and the only player to reach base safely walked.

Flora left with a 1-0 lead. He could not have been credited with the victory anyway because he did not go the required five innings; he was named Washington Park Advisors Player of the Game, however.

Shortstop Blake Wilson (Washington) doubled and scored in the first inning and gave the Knights a 2-1 lead with a fifth-inning sacrifice fly. Kevin Takeuchi (USC) had his team-best 17th RBI in the first and Quin Dufort (Portland) drove in a run with a groundout to send the Knights ahead 3-1 in the sixth inning.

Pitchers Mason Goodson (Oregon) and Cohen Gomez (Stanford) made their summer debuts in relief.

The Knights are idle on June 17. They open a three-game series with Springfield on June 18; starting pitchers have not been announced.

June 18 is Youth Sports Night; the first 250 kids will receive a free sheet of 2023 Knights trading cards, and a pack of Big League Chew.

June 19 is Lebanon Night. Residents of Lebanon at the game will receive a special surprise.

June 20 is Embrace Baldness Night. The first 50 bald people through the gates will receive a free beanie to keep their heads warm.
