North rallies late for 3-2 victory in WCL All-Star Game

Wednesday, July 17, Bellingham, Wash. – A two-run infield single with two outs in the last of the ninth inning gave the North Division a 3-2 victory over the South Division in the West Coast League All-Star Game at Joe Martin Stadium.

With the South clinging to a 2-1 lead entering the home ninth, a hit, a walk and a hit batsman loaded the bases with no outs.  A force out at home and a strikeout kept the South ahead, but Gavyn Jones hit a 3-2 pitch deep to the hole at shortstop and two runners scored.

The South team was led by Corvallis skipper Brooke Knight and his coaching staff. Seven Knights played in the game, which drew a capacity crowd and was televised by the MLB Network.

South starter Kaden Segel (Portland) threw two scoreless innings. Reliever Tyner Horn (Nebraska) escaped unscathed from a two-out, none-on jam in the sixth inning to preserve the South’s 2-0 lead.

The North touched James DeCremer (Oregon State) for two walks, two hits and a run in the seventh, but the potential tying run was thrown out at home to end the inning.

Ty Yukumoto (Pacific, pictured above right) was 1-for-1 with a run scored. Blake Wilson (Washington) and Brandon Cabrera (Lewis-Clark State, pictured above, left) were each 0-for-1 with a walk and Kevin Takeuchi went 0-for-3.

Corvallis (32-8 overall, 28-8 WCL, 6-3 second half) returns home on July 18 for a nonconference game against the Northwest Stars. On Friday they host the Bend Elks in the opener of a three-game series split between the two cities; the July 20 and July 21 games will be in Bend.

July 19 is Alyrica Cap Giveaway Night. The first 750 fans receive a free Knights cap, courtesy of Alyrica Networks.

Corvallis has clinched the first-half South Division championship and will advance to the West Coast League playoffs for the 17th consecutive season. The postseason starts on Aug. 10.
