Thursday, June 17, Walla Walla, Wash. – The Walla Sweets snapped the Corvallis Knights five-game win streak with a tight 7-6 home win.
Walla Walla scored early and often plating two in the first and four more in the second off Knights starter Grant Taylor of Washington State to put the Sweets up 6-2 after two complete.
But Corvallis would fight back, making it a one-run game twice, at 6-5 and again by scoring in the 9th to close within a run at 7-6.
The Knights offense was led by Nick Vogt of UC Santa Barbara who had a RBI double in the third inning and RBI single in the 9th.
In his Corvallis debut, frosh pitcher Chase Walter of Cal Poly was stellar not allowing a hit or run in 2 2/3 innings of relief.
Southpaw reliever Colton Meyer of Linfield kept the Knights in the game by pitching out of a bases loaded jam with one out in the seventh inning, retiring the two batters he faced by strikeout and fly out.
Corvallis committed three errors on the night, which hurt them early and late. Two errors in the first, one by third baseman Tanner Smith and the other by Taylor, led to a couple runs and a miscue in the 8th proved to be the difference. An error by shortstop Jake Hoskins of Linn-Benton CC with one out in the bottom of the 8th resulted in an unearned run after the Sweets doubled with two outs and then scored on a wild pitch to give the home team the two-run advantage at 7-5.
Rising junior Taison Corio of Cal Poly reached base all five times with two hits and three walks for Corvallis. He scored 3 times.
The Knights drop to 6-3 on the summer, and make the late night drive home to Corvallis to get ready for their WCL home opener Friday night vs. Cowlitz.
