Pilots Scott, Loveless returning to Knights

Thursday, February 24, Corvallis, Ore. – University of Portland infielder Spencer Scott (left) and outfielder Ethan Loveless (right) will be back for their second seasons with the Corvallis Knights in 2022, Knights head coach Brooke Knight announced Thursday.

Scott is a freshman, Loveless a sophomore for the Pilots’ 2022 season.

A 6-foot, 195-pounder from Grant High School in Portland, Scott played several infield positions for the 2021 Knights and hit .343 in 30 games, with no homers and 14 RBIs. He blasted a .438 average in five playoff games, with two RBIs.

He went 2-for-4 in a 12-1 victory over Creighton on Feb. 19 in his Portland debut.

“Spencer is a very good overall athlete,” said Portland coach Geoff Loomis, a four-year Knights alum. “He can play anywhere on the infield and has the arm strength to stick on the left side.”

“A leader on a very talented Grant team, Spencer is one of the best infielders in the Northwest and we are excited for him to stay in Portland.”

Scott starred at Grant from 2018-21 and earned first-team PIL honors in 2021, 2019 and 2018, and was the PIL Player-of-the-Year in 2021 (the 2020 season was canceled due to Covid-19). He hit .466 with a 1.721 OPS, 10 doubles, 10 homers and 35 RBIs as a senior.

He also played for the Oregon team in the 2015 Little League World Series alongside Knights alums Kaden Segel (Linn-Benton CC) and Sam Stuhr (Oregon State). A Los Angeles Dodgers fan, Spencer’s favorites are Cars (movie), The Office (TV show) and Percy Jackson (book). He also enjoys fishing and basketball.

Originally a 10-game signee in 2021, Loveless is an Olympia, Wash., native who rejoined the Knights midway through the season and hit .277 in 19 games, with a homer and six RBIs. A 6-foot, 200-pounder, he played for the Western Nebraska Pioneers in the Expedition League in 2020.

Loveless was a four-year letterman and three-time captain at Black Hills High School in Tumwater, Wash. He compiled a .350 career average and a .450 on-base percentage and was a two-time first-team Evergreen Conference all-star. Loveless also was a four-time all-academic selection and earned Evergreen Conference Offensive Player of the Year honors in football.

He is a Seattle Mariners fan. His favorites are Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (movie); The Suite Life on Deck (TV show), and the Phil Knight autobiography Shoe Dog (book).

The Knights begin the 2022 season on May 26 with their annual Science, Engineering & Art Day presented by Paventy & Brown Orthodontics at Goss Stadium against the NW Star Nighthawks. Their WCL opener is June 3 at Yakima Valley; their WCL home opener is June 17 vs. Yakima Valley.
