Saturday, June 13, Bend, Ore. – Bend evened its West Coast League South Division series with the Knights at a game apiece with a 6-3 victory before a Vince Genna Stadium crowd of 1,193.
The Elks rallied from a 3-1 deficit to snap the Knights’ (9-5, 8-5 WCL) three-game winning streak. Corvallis remained in second place in the South Division, 1.5-games behind Ridgefield.
Stanford-bound shortstop Archer Horn continued his hot hitting and smashed a two-run double in the second inning to send the Knights ahead 2-1. Xavier Rios (CSUN) followed with a double and scored on an error for a 3-1 spread.
Horn has two doubles, a homer and six RBIs in the series thus far.
However, Bend parlayed pitching wildness and defensive mistakes into five unanswered runs. The Elks scored three times in the fourth and twice in the sixth to take a 6-3 lead, and their bullpen quieted Corvallis over the final seven innings.
Lefty reliever Mac Zawistoski (Eastern Illinois) was the most effective pitcher for the Knights. He closed out the game by pitching 2.2 scoreless innings, allowing one hit and one walk.
The series finale is scheduled for 5:05 p.m. June 14 at Vince Genna Stadium. It ends a stretch that has seen the Knights play 12 of their first 14 games on the road.
The Knights return home on June 15 for a 6:35 p.m. battle with the Marion Berries; Corvallis won the first two games of the series on June 10-11. It’s the opener of a nine-game homestand that concludes on June 25.
