We have signed George Fox University freshman catcher Austin Baek (pictured, above) to a 10-day contract. He is a 5-foot-9, 170-pounder from Bothell High School in the Seattle suburb of Both, Wash., who will join the Bruins for the 2018 season.
Baek hit .438 (28-64) in 23 games as a senior, with a homer and nine RBIs. He hit .433 (31-87) in 23 games as a junior, with nine RBIs. He earned first-team all-KingCo honors as a senior and second-team honors as a junior.
Players are signed to 10-day contracts to add depth early in the season, before all the full-time signees report. They can be retained as full-time players.
“All of our full-time catchers will be in school for the first couple weeks of the season,” said Dan Segel, CEO of Knights Baseball Inc. “So, Austin is our only catching option for all the early games. He comes highly recommended from George Fox.”

Some news on some Knights’ major-league/minor-league alums:
- The Tampa Bay Rays added infielder Matt Duffy (2010) to their active roster on Nov. 2. The Long Beach State alum spent the entire 2017 season on the disabled list following offseason ankle surgery.
- Right-handed pitcher Bud Norris (2005) elected free agency on Nov. 2. The Cal Poly product pitched for the Los Angeles Angels in 2017 and was 2-6, 4.21 in 60 games, with 19 saves and 74 strikeouts in 62 innings.
- Right-handed pitcher D. J. Johnson (2008-9) has re-signed with Colorado. He spent 2017 at Hartford of the double-A Eastern League and was 1-1, 2.80 in 43 games, with four saves and 51 strikeouts in 64.1 innings.
- Right-handed pitcher Trevor Frank (2012) was assigned to the Venezuelan Winter League by San Diego. He spent most of 2017 at Lake Elsinore in the advanced-A California League and was 4-4, 4.23 in 43 games, with seven saves and 66 strikeouts in 55.1 innings. He also pitched two games at triple-A El Paso.
