Avery clouts first HR in 14-7 loss to Berries

Monday, June 23, Salem, Ore. – A two-run homer by Brooks Avery (LBCC, pictured above) was the highlight of the night for the Knights in a 14-7 loss to the Marion Berries in their inaugural home game before a crowd of more than 1,200 at Chemeketa Community College.

Avery connected for his first round-tripper of the season in the ninth inning. It easily cleared the left-field fence and also scored Thomas Ferroggiaro (Santa Clara).

Gavin Brubaker (NW Nazarene) was 2-for-5 and scored twice for the Knights. Maddox Riske (USC) had an RBI and Brock Ketelsen (Stanford) struck out the side in a scoreless eighth inning in his pitching debut.

The loss ended a six-game winning streak for Corvallis (12-9 all, 11-9 WCL). It retained its hold on third place in the South Division, one game ahead of the Berries.

The Knights now head to Yakima for a three-game set with the Pippins on June 24-26. Their scheduled starting pitcher are J’Shawn Unger of Nebraska (1-0, 2.13), Easton Jones of Utah (2-1, 2.59) and Zach Johnson of Linfield (0-1, 4.84).

Their next home games are June 27-29 vs. Cowlitz.
